The day started early to say farewell to Adriena and Gabby, her gorgeous 2 year old who made me miss Luella even more. After catching a Bart into central San Francisco I checked into my hostel and got my day going.

My first stop was a tour of Alcatraz. As usual I arrived there early and enjoyed some people watching before jumping on the ferry to head out to the rock. Before arriving I expected it to have a similar feel to Robben Island but it was very different.

As we docked there was some graffiti saying "Indians welcome" which took me by surprise until I learnt later what it was about. After the prison was closed in the 60's native Indians pitched some teepees on the island and tried to inhabit it. They weren't there for long but it explained the graffiti.

Once docked I took the audio tour which explained various aspects of the prison and some of the criminals who were kept there. They also went into some detail on some of the escape attempts. The main difference I got from Robben Island and Alcatraz was the size. Alcatraz is literally a rock sticking out of the ocean compared to Robben Island which is much bigger and is more than just the prison.

Towards the end of my time on the rock a met some fellow travelers. We made our way back to the city to visit some sea lions and enjoy an amazing sunset. We went back to the bar at their hostel where we met some other travelers and enjoyed some conversation and beers before calling it a night.
